Stelo ( Esper. Stelo , lit. "star", plural Steloj ) - an international monetary unit used by the Esperanto movement in 1945 - 1993 . The prototype for the stela was a spezmilo , the Esperantist monetary unit that existed before the First World War (some images for stele coins were borrowed from a specialty coin). The Esperanto Universal League ( Esper. Universala Ligo ), formed underground in 1942, minted coins and coupons with a denomination expressed in stela and sold them as souvenirs .

In 1977, a fixed cost was established for a stela regardless of inflation: 1 Dutch guilder was equal to 2 stelos.
In 1993, the Universal League was dissolved, the stelo also ceased to exist.
In the 2010s Esperanto congresses distributed plastic tokens with a denomination in the stela [1] .
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Rene de Saussure, the Austrian Mint issued a silver coin with a face value of 100 steles, which is still on sale [1] .
In recent years, experiments have been conducted with the creation of new "Esperanto currencies": banknotes nominated in "mono", as well as cryptocurrency monero.
