Mech or fur in the technique - a device for forcing air. Most often it is a bag or sliding casing of various shapes with valves and regulators. It is used to produce a continuous air jet and is used mainly in forge ( blacksmith ) and glassblowing, as well as in some musical instruments (such as bagpipes , accordion and organ ).
The technical meaning of the device is that the air is injected in portions into a large tank, from which it then flows out in a stable (continuous) flow. Thus, interruptions in the supply of air are eliminated (for example, in the organ the bellows during the reproduction of sound allow the pipes of the organ to work evenly).
Plain bellows may not have a reservoir. In this case, the technical meaning is to create a batch airflow due to the application of physical force (there is no stable flow at the same time). To obtain a relatively stable flow, a pair of similar bellows working in antiphase is used.
Mechs are known from ancient times (they were used in ancient Egypt ). In the blacksmith and glassblowing business were widely used until the XX century, when they were replaced by compressors . In musical instruments are used to this day.
