This article provides the details of the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament in the Asia-Pacific Continental Zone ( AFC and OFC ). An overview of the qualifying tournament is presented in the article FIFA World Cup 1982 (Qualifying tournament) .
21 AFC and OFC countries have applied for participation in the 1982 World Cup . However
Iran starred before the draw. The Asia-Pacific continental zone received 2 (out of 24) permits for the final tournament.
The qualifying tournament was played in two stages:
- First stage : 20 countries were divided into 4 groups. The groups had different regulations:
- Group 1 consisted of 5 countries. Teams played each with each house and away. The winner of the group reached the final stage.
- Group 2 consisted of 5 countries. Teams played each in a single round in Saudi Arabia. The winner of the group reached the final stage.
- Group 3 consisted of 4 countries. Teams played each in a single round in Kuwait. The winner of the group reached the final stage.
- Group 4 consisted of 6 countries. All matches were played in Hong Kong. Group games consisted of four rounds:
- Qualification : All countries in pairs played one match to determine the composition of the groups.
- Group round : Based on qualifications, 6 countries were divided into 2 groups of 3 teams each. The teams played each in one circle. Two best teams from each group reached the semi-finals.
- Semifinals : The winner of Group A played one match against the team taking second place in Group B, and the winner of Group B played one match against the team taking second place in Group A. The winners reached the final.
- Final : 2 countries played one match. The winner reached the final stage.
- Final stage : 4 teams played each from each house and away. The two best teams received permits.
