Biography

Sillitow was born in Nottingham to parents from a poor working family, his father's name was Christopher, and his mother was Sabina. Like the antihero of his first novel, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, Arthur Seaton, who was published in 1958 , Arthur Seaton, the writer’s father worked at a bicycle factory . His father was an ignorant and rude person who often changed jobs, because of this his family often went hungry. Alan was close to a group of angry young people . He devoted many works to the fate of British workers. He came to the USSR more than once, but after 1968 , when he spoke about the violation of human rights in the Soviet Union in his speech at the Congress of Soviet Writers, he became a persona non grata. He left several memoirs, including those about trips to the USSR ( Gadfly in Russia , 2007 ).

He was married to the poetess Ruth Feinlight .

Films

A number of works by Sillitou were filmed ( Karel Reish , Tony Richardson , Ralph Nelson), the films were significant success. The script for Saturday Night Sunday Morning, written by Sillitow, was nominated for a BAFTA Award.
