Born in Berlin. After graduating from school, from 1878 to 1883 he studied the profession of a piano master. In 1890, he was elected chairman of the piano manufacturers union. In 1893-1903 he was the editor of the Social Democratic newspaper Vorwärts (Forward). In 1903, he was elected to the general commission of German trade unions.
In 1893-1898 and 1903-1918, Schmidt was one of the deputies of the Reichstag of the German Empire . And after the November Revolution became part of the Weimar Constituent Assembly . He remained a deputy of the Reichstag until 1930.
In the office of Scheidemann, Schmidt was appointed Minister of Food. Later he also repeatedly held ministerial posts, and in the government of Gustav Stresemann Schmidt was vice chancellor.
