Andaman and Nicobar Islands ( Hindi अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप ; Eng. Andaman and Nicobar Islands ) - an island union territory within India . The administrative center and largest city is Port Blair . The population is 379,944 people ( 2011 ).

Content
Geography
Area 8249 km² (1st place among the Union territories). The territory is located in the southeastern part of the Bay of Bengal of the Indian Ocean . It consists of two groups of islands ( Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands ), separated by the Tenth Degrees Strait . The total number of islands is about 570, of which about 550 are in the Andaman Islands. There are about 40 inhabited islands in the territory, including 26 in the Andaman part.
History
Settlements on the islands of the Bay of Bengal have existed for several millennia.
The first English colony was created here at the end of the XVIII century, it existed from 1789 to 1796. On a permanent basis, the territory was colonized in 1858. During the British rule, the islands were used as a place of exile and imprisonment for Indian rebels.
During World War II, the islands were temporarily captured by Japan. After the war, they came under Indian control and in 1950 received the status of union territory.

Demographics
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are unique in their ethnic and genetic composition. Aborigines of the Andaman Islands previously spoke Andaman languages that are not related to well-known language families (almost all of them have disappeared by now), while Aborigines of the Nicobar Islands spoke Nicobar languages of the Austro-Asian family , as well as isolated Chompens .

In the story of Arthur Conan Doyle's “ Sign of the Four, ” one of the main characters is a savage from the Andaman Islands.
