Biography

Born November 21, 1923 in the village of Pomorie (now does not exist, it was located within the boundaries of the Topchikhinsky district of the Altai Territory ) in the family of a peasant Sevastyan Andreevich Karnakov [2] . He received an incomplete secondary education, worked on a collective farm [3] .

In March 1942, the Topchikhinsky district military enlistment office was drafted into the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In the active forces from July 19, 1942, he fought on Voronezh , then on the South-Western Front . According to award documents, in the battles near Voronezh Karnakov destroyed 38 enemy bunkers with weapons and calculation [2] . By the beginning of 1943, the Red Army soldier Karnakov was the gunner of the 6th battery of the 844th artillery regiment ( 303rd Infantry Division , 57th Army , Southwestern Front) [3] . He was a member of the CPSU (b) [2] .

In the battle for the village of Prokudino, on January 25, 1943, Karnakov directly aimed at destroying 4 enemy machine guns and up to 150 machine gunners, ensuring the unhindered advance of the Soviet infantry. As a result of the battle, Prokudino was occupied by Soviet troops [2] .

During the offensive on Kharkov on March 12, 1943, the 844th artillery regiment supported the fighting of the infantry regiments of the division in the area of ​​the village of Korotich (now an urban-type settlement, Kharkiv district , Kharkov region , Ukraine ). Karnakov’s gun was in the battle formations of the 845th Infantry Regiment, whose positions were attacked by large enemy forces with the support of tanks and assault guns. The calculation of the guns managed to destroy 5 tanks and up to 50 enemy soldiers. During the battle, the entire crew, except for the wounded in the leg of Karnakov, was destroyed. The Red Army man, alone loading and aiming the gun, managed to knock out two more German tanks. Having consumed all the shells and being surrounded, Karnakov blew himself up and the gun with an anti-tank grenade [3] [2] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of August 7, 1943, for the exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the struggle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown to them, the Red Army soldier Karnakov was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union [3] .
