Biography
After the war, the Netherlands experienced an outbreak of anti-Semitic sentiments (this information is not confirmed on the English and German pages: [1] , [2] ), in 1950 the family of M. Creveld was forced to relocate to Israel. And starting from 5 years old, Creveld lived in Israel. He graduated from the famous London School of Economics and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he has been teaching since 1971.
Scientific work
Martin van Creveld is a world-famous leading military analyst, historian, global strategist, professor of military history, consultant with the US Department of Defense. He is periodically published in various media, spoke on channels such as BBC, CNN and others.
The main reasons for the outbreak of wars van Creveld considers the existence of states in their current form. “One of the most important functions of the state (like all previous forms of political organizations) was to conduct wars against their own kind. If it weren’t for the need to fight, it would almost certainly have been much more difficult to centralize power in the hands of the great monarchs. If it were not for the needs of warfare, the development of the bureaucratic system, taxation, and even the system of social services in the field of education, healthcare, etc., would probably have been much slower. As history shows, the creation of all these services was somehow connected with the desire of the rulers to induce subjects to be more willing to fight for the respective states ” [3] .
He also believes that de jure and de facto by the end of XX century. interstate war has become a thing of the past. The right to wage war, instead of remaining an integral part of sovereignty, was revoked, except when it was used strictly for self-defense; and even in those cases when the states nevertheless waged a war solely in self-defense (and precisely for this purpose), they were no longer allowed to benefit from territorial changes. So the war lost its main attractive property. At the same time, if we talk about the leading powers, with the advent of nuclear weapons, rates have increased significantly; it is not surprising that the likelihood of war has decreased, at least between these states [3] .
