History
The first settlement at the confluence of the Pegnitz and Rednitz rivers appeared around 800 years . The first mention of the city of Fürth refers to the year 1007 , when Emperor Henry II granted him possession of the Bishop of Bamberg . During the Thirty Years War, Fürth was destroyed.
In 1632, Gustav II Adolf located his main apartment in Fürth; in 1634 the city was burned by the Croats . In 1792, Fürth moved to Prussia , which greatly contributed to the development of the industry of the then town; In 1806, Fürth passed to Bavaria and in 1818 received city government.
At the end of the 14th century , Jews who had fled from the pogroms from Nuremberg settled in Fürth. A large Jewish community existed in the city for about five centuries. At its peak, Jews constituted about a quarter of the population of Fürth, numerous synagogues , talmudic schools and yeshivas worked in the city, books and newspapers were published in Yiddish . For this, in nearby Nuremberg, Fürth was nicknamed "The Franconian Jerusalem." The poet and journalist (Moses Safir) has turned the scornful nickname into a symbol of pride of the Jewish community of the city. [five]
During the war, the city almost did not suffer and remained one of the few cities in Germany, which has preserved historic buildings almost in full. The Allies refrained from bombing at the request of refugees from the city’s Jewish community.
In 2007, the city celebrated its 1,000th anniversary.
The city is known for its Greuther Furth football team ( German SpVgg Greuther Fürth). It was founded in 1903 . At the end of the 2011–2012 season, the team managed to reach the first Bundesliga .
