Physical Properties
Melting point 1569 Β° C. Boiling point 3127 Β° C * (* -excited with dissociation) Two syngonies of manganese (II) oxide crystals are known:
- cubic ( a = 0.4448 nm);
- hexagonal modification (stable up to 155.3 Β° C);
Antiferromagnet with NΓ©el point 122 K, semiconductor . Molar mass of 70.94 g / mol. The color of the crystals is green or gray-green. The cubic syngony has a density of 5.18 g / cm 3 .
Chemical Properties
Basic oxide. Insoluble in water. It readily oxidizes to form a brittle shell of MnO 2 . It is reduced to manganese when heated with hydrogen or active metals.
Geological properties
It is rare in nature. It is part of manganositol.
Getting
Manganese (II) oxide can be obtained by calcining at a temperature of 300 Β° C the oxygen-containing salts of manganese (II) in an inert gas atmosphere. From the common MnO 2 it is obtained through partial reduction at temperatures of 700-900 Β° C with hydrogen or carbon monoxide .
Application
It is used as a catalyst for the dehydrogenation of piperidine .
Used for desulfurization of metals.
A component of many ceramic materials .
Manganese (II) salts are widely used as catalysts for oxidation processes. For example, the addition of salts to linseed oil accelerates the oxidation of the latter with atmospheric oxygen, thereby accelerating the drying of the paint . Flaxseed oil containing manganese (II) salts ( desiccant ) is called drying oil .
