IJsseloog ( Netherlands. IJsseloog ) - an artificial island in the center of Lake Ketelmer in the Netherlands . Created as a repository of toxic sludge obtained in the process of cleaning the bottom of the lake and dredging .
The construction of the IJselog storage facility began in 1996 and was completed in 1999. The island is a circular dam with a diameter of 1 km, rising to a height of 10 m above the surface of the lake. The dam encloses a body of water with a depth of 45 m and consists of materials extracted by digging this body of water. The inner side of the walls of the dam is covered with a film that prevents leakage of contaminated sludge into the lake or groundwater .
Pollution that settled on the bottom of Ketelmere in a thick layer fell into it along the IJssel and other branches of the Rhine , into which the plants poured their waste water, especially from 1950 to the 1990s. Placing a repository of contaminated materials on the lake has several advantages - it does not cause inconvenience to local residents, and also minimizes contact with the environment. The amount of waste stored on the island is 23 million m³.
Treatment works began in 2000. There are processing stations on the island that separate pollutants and sand from peat . The cleaned sand is used for construction, peat is transferred to a nearby marshland, and the remaining sludge is pumped to the storage. When the storehouse is full, it will be sealed with layers of clay and sand, and the island itself will then be used for recreational purposes .
