History
In 2004, Harrah's Entertainment, the owner of the rights to the label WSOP, acquired the company London Club International. At the same time, it was decided to promote the WSOP brand to the European market. European casinos have significant differences from the US, so the WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack said that "European tournaments will have their own unique style."
Despite the fact that the European market is very saturated with various tournaments, the organizers expressed the opinion that the WSOP brand and recognition of the bracelets of the series as one of the prestigious awards will help the new series of tournaments to quickly gain the authority and attention of players and spectators.
However, Harrah's does not rely only on the WSOP brand. On July 5, 2007, an alliance was announced with Betfair, one of the largest online gambling companies in the UK. The reputation of "Betfair" was to help advance the WSOPE.
In 2007, the US tightened laws governing the game for money online. This led to the cancellation of qualifying tournaments for the WSOP online. WSOPE does not fall under these restrictions. British laws allowed to bring to the game more young players than allowed in the USA. One of these players, 18-year-old Annette Obrestad from Norway , became the winner of the first WSOPE Main Event.
