Born in the family of the pastor (later archbishop) EELC Jaan Kiivit . In 1959 he graduated from high school and entered the Theological Institute of EELC. In 1964, he was appointed vicar of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Tallinn . The following year he was appointed there by the parish pastor. On February 2, 1966, he was ordained pastor by his father and appointed rector of the same community. In this post, he remained until 1994.
From 1987 to 1994 he taught practical theology at the Theological Institute, in 1989-1991 he served as the curator of the institute, and in 1991-1992 as its rector.
Since 1980 he was a member of the Consistory, in 1986 he became an assessor. Since 1990, was a member of the Council of Consistory. In 1990 and 1991, he represented EELC in the working group on the revival of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Tartu . In 1989-1994, he coordinated the collaboration of the EELC and the North Elbe Evangelical Lutheran Church (NEK). Since 1992, he headed the Church Council on Foreign Relations.
On June 29, 1994, he was elected Archbishop of EELC, and on October 31, 1994 Jaan Kiivit was elevated to the rank of. On February 2, 2005, he retired to the emperor, and on that day he was replaced by the archbishop of Estonia, Andres Pyder .
Suddenly died in St. Petersburg . He was buried in Tallinn at the Rahumäe cemetery .
