22 CAF countries have applied for participation in the 1974 World Cup (two have starred). The African continental zone received 1 (out of 16) ticket to the final tournament.
The qualifying tournament was played in four stages:
- First stage , second stage and third stage : In each of these stages, the teams in pairs determined the winner of two matches (at home and away). Winners went to the next stage.
- Final stage : 3 countries played each from each house and away. The winner received a ticket.
