Dutch Formosa

Map of Taiwan by Jan Wingbones, circa 1640

Dutch Formosa is the colonial rule of Holland in Taiwan , established in 1624 by Kuhn and continued through 1662 .

The Dutch East India Company built several forts on the island, the main purpose of which was to support trade with Japan and China and protect against rivals in the colonization of Asia - Spain and Portugal . The capital of the colony was located in Fort Zeeland (the latter is currently included in the Tainan Anpin area).

Dutch colonial rule led to an upswing in Taiwan's economy, mainly to the establishment of rice and sugar plantations that employed workers exported from Fujian . The government also made efforts to convert Taiwanese Aborigines to Christianity and “civilize” them, in particular by forbidding them to walk naked.

However, in general, the population of the island was dissatisfied with the colonial power. The uprisings against her, both Aboriginal people and ethnic Chinese who arrived on the island, were brutally suppressed by the Dutch army. The colonial period lasted only 37 years and ended with the invasion of Taiwan by the Chinese army of Zheng Chenggong . The Dutch colony was replaced by the state of Dunning .
