Biography

Born September 21, 1428 in Beijing . The youngest son of the Chinese emperor Zhu Zhanji . Prior to his accession to the imperial throne, he held the title of Grand Duke Cheng (Cheng-wang).

In 1449, the Chinese emperor Zhu Qizhen , the elder brother of Zhu Qiyu, was defeated at the Battle of Tuma and captured by the Mongols. Mongol troops under the command of Esen-taisha besieged Beijing. However, the Chinese military leader Yu Qian , who led the defense of the capital, proclaimed the new emperor Zhu Qiyu, the younger brother of the prisoner Zhu Qizhen. Yu Qian was able to inflict a serious defeat on the Mongols. In 1450, the captive emperor Zhu Qizhen was released by Esen-taisha from captivity and returned to China. Zhu Qiyu, fearing his elder brother, ordered that Zhu Qizheng and his heir son Zhu Jiangshen be placed under house arrest. The new emperor Zhu Qiyu proclaimed the heir to the throne of his only son, Zhu Zhanye ( 1448 - 1453 ), who soon died.

In February 1457, the captured emperor Zhu Qizhen plotted against his younger brother Zhu Qiyu to regain the imperial throne. Zhu Qiyu was ousted from the throne and imprisoned under house arrest. But already on March 14, the ousted emperor was killed by eunuchs on the orders of his older brother Zhu Qicheng .

Zhu Qiyu had a son and two daughters.
