The purpose of biblical criticism is to weaken confidence in the miracles of Jesus Christ. He believed that many of the miracles of Christ have a reasonable explanation. He expanded the platform of deism proposed by Lord Herbert Cherbury (he added the provision that God rules the world through Providence).
