Maxi Gregg ( born Maxcy Gregg ; August 1, 1814 , Columbia , South Carolina - December 15, 1862 , Fredericksburg, Virginia ) is an American lawyer, commander of the U.S. Army during the Mexican War , General of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War . He was killed in 1862 at the Battle of Frederiksberg .

Early years
Gregg was born in Columbia , South Carolina and was the grandson of Ezek Hopkins, commander of the Continental Fleet. He studied at South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina). He worked as a lawyer with his father, participated in the Mexican War as a major of the 12th Infantry Regiment. He was fond of astronomy , botany , ornithology , foreign languages, and also had his own personal observatory .
Gregg was an active politician and one of the delegates to the South Carolina Secession Meeting, where he voted to secede from the Union. [1]
Civil War
He was an active supporter of secession , and after the separation of South Carolina from the Union (in December 1860 ) helped organize the 1st South Carolina Infantry Regiment , which was accepted into the state service for 6 months on January 8. Gregg became his colonel .
December 14, 1861 became a brigadier general and served in the " light division " Ambrose Hill . His brigade played a decisive role during Hill's attack at Gains Mill (during the Seven-Day Battle ). Gained fame after the Second Battle of Bull Run , where his men repelled six federal attacks. He later participated in the Maryland campaign of General Lee . During this campaign, his brigade consisted of five regiments:
- 1st South Carolines Infantry Regiment : Colonel Daniel Hamilton
- 1st South Carolina Rifle : Lt. Col. James Perrin
- 12th South Carolines Infantry Regiment : Colonel Dixon Barnes
- 13th South Carol Infantry Regiment : Colonel Oliver Edwards
- 14th South Carol Infantry Regiment : Lt. Col. William Simpson
At the battle of Entityam, he was wounded in the thigh by the same bullet that hit General Lawrence Branch .
At the battle of Fredericksburg, his brigade came under attack from George Mead's division. Gregg was injured in the spine and died two days later. Generals Jackson and Hill visited him when he was dying in Yerby's house. He died before sunrise on December 15 [2] . He was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery (District of Columbia, South Carolina ). Gregg's brigade was handed over to Samuel McGowan .
