The events of Grand Theft Auto III take place in the fictional American city of Liberty City , the prototype for which was New York . The protagonist of the game is an unnamed criminal who fell victim to the criminal conspiracy of his girlfriend Catalina , and Miguel , a member of the Colombian drug cartel. The game contains elements of a car simulator and a third-person shooter .
The concept of the game and the gameplay , combined with the use of a 3D game engine for the first time in this series of games, contributed to the fact that Grand Theft Auto III was well received by the players and became the best-selling video game of 2001 [9] and, together with subsequent games of the series, Grand Theft Auto : Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas , had a significant impact on the gaming industry [10] and the sale of the PlayStation 2 game console .
Gameplay
Grand Theft Auto III is an action-adventure game that combines elements of a third-person shooter and elements of a car simulator in a large and open for exploration game world with classic controls for this genre.
The game develops the basic ideas of the gameplay of the last game in the series - Grand Theft Auto 2 : the player has to fulfill, mainly criminal and illegal tasks, issued by various characters of the game.
The player receives most of the missions from criminal bosses and other characters of the game, as well as using several telephone booths located in the city. But you can also get additional instructions if the player gets to a certain place in the game world or gets into a certain car. After a player receives a task, he cannot undertake other missions until he completes (or fails) the current one.
Outside the vehicle, the main character controlled by the player can walk, run, jump, use weapons and fight hand-to-hand, but cannot swim. Players can drive various vehicles, including watercraft and aircraft. An open environment allows players to move around freely and choose what they will do in the game world. However, in order to complete the game and discover new areas of the city, it is necessary to complete story missions, otherwise they are not mandatory and can be completed by the player at any time. Outside of missions, the player is free in actions and movement, and can perform many illegal actions in the real world: to kill passers-by and police, to steal and blow up cars, etc. Criminal offenses attract the attention of law enforcement agencies and increase the level of player’s search for police.
In the game interface, it is reflected in the form of "stars" in the right corner of the game screen. At the appropriate search level, the corresponding number of "stars" is highlighted. At the minimum search level, the minimum police forces are sent to catch the protagonist, and with an increase in the search level, the police will be sent to help the police: at level 3 the police helicopter, at 4 - special forces ( SWAT ), at 5 - FBI agents , at 6 - US Army with tanks. You can get rid of the wanted list
repainting a car in a paint salon or taking a police bribe in the form of a star - it reduces the wanted level by one point.
If the character is arrested or he dies from his injuries, the player’s character reappears at the police station or hospital, respectively, deprived of an arsenal of weapons and body armor, as well as part of the money spent on giving bribes or treatment. In fact, the player’s character in Grand Theft Auto III is unlimited in number of lives, unlike Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 , where the number of lives was limited. This allows the character to “die” as many times as the player pleases, making it impossible to finish the game ahead of time .
One of the main features of the previous games in the series, which migrated unchanged in Grand Theft Auto III, was the ability to earn money by committing various crimes - stealing or destroying vehicles, killing civilians. The amount of cash is no longer the main requirement for opening new areas. From now on, it depends on the passage of plot tasks. In addition, the player is free to return to all unlocked areas of the city at any time. However, with the discovery of new areas, staying in the previous ones becomes more dangerous due to the attack on the player’s character by enemy groups.
The game interface has been revised. The minimap displays the player’s location, key points (places to save and receive assignments), and assignment objectives. Health and armor levels are in numerical format; Added clocks showing in-game time. It was decided to abandon the indicators of respect, as in Grand Theft Auto 2 . From now on, the attitude of the group members to the player’s character depends on the progress of the plot.
The game retained in-game bonuses, such as a first-aid kit, body armor, a police bribe (lowering the level of police search by one level), an adrenaline pill (slowing down in-game time and increasing the force of the blow).
Grand Theft Auto III was the first game in the series in which there was no multiplayer. However, with the help of one of the amateur modifications known as Multi Theft Auto , it was possible to return the multi-user mode .
Assignments and Nonlinearity
Game assignments are divided into two types: story and side. The plot tasks themselves are linear, their passage promotes a pre-written plot and opens up access to new areas of Liberty City. Part of the story assignments is optional.
In addition to the 50 main story missions, there are additional secondary missions - missions on city services cars, SUVs, car theft missions and others. The game retains the Rampage missions present in Grand Theft Auto 2 , which are activated when the protagonist took one of the skull-shaped icons throughout the city. At the same time, the player receives an additional secret mission, the meaning of which is to destroy a certain number of participants or vehicles of a certain gang in 2 minutes using any type of weapon. Also from the previous game of the series, the so-called. “Unique jumps” - there are ski jumps located on the territory of the city, including 20 unique ones, for which the jumps made on cars, in addition to the cash bonus, the player also receives a message about a unique jump.
For each successfully completed task, the player receives a reward: cash or in the form of weapons and vehicles.
Innovations
Grand Theft Auto III was the first three-dimensional game in the series. In the game, unlike previous games in the series, the three-dimensional Renderware engine was used, which was subsequently involved in subsequent Rockstar games. The unprecedented freedom of action inherent in GTA games in general has become a key feature of Grand Theft Auto III.
Now you can upload your own music tracks in MP3 format to the game, which are then played on a separate radio station.
Weapons
In Grand Theft Auto III, the protagonist has the ability to simultaneously carry one type of weapon of each type. The weapons in the game are represented by firearms, melee weapons (hand-to-hand and baseball bats ) and explosives. His set is in many ways similar to the choice of weapons from Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 , such as, for example, the M1911 , Micro Uzi , AK-47 and M16A1 , a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and a flamethrower , which are based on similar weapons from GTA; Shotgun and throwing weapons ( Molotov cocktails and hand grenades ) from Grand Theft Auto 2 . Also appeared several completely new types of weapons.
Thanks to the three-dimensional game engine, it became possible to use the scope in a sniper rifle and the first-person view in the M16A1 and rocket launcher. It was also possible to fire from a vehicle using Micro Uzi when turning on the side view in the vehicle. Carrying certain types of weapons limits the speed of movement of the protagonist. Weapons can be purchased in specialized stores, obtained for completing certain game tasks, or picked up from murdered members of various criminal gangs. It is also possible to obtain weapons by collecting "secret packages" located in various places on the territory of the gaming city. For every 10 packs collected, the player receives one of the weapons as a bonus.
Vehicles
The game features 54 types of vehicles , including 4 boats and 1 aircraft , which are available to control the player. Most are ordinary cars, but there are also special cars belonging to members of certain gangs, as well as service vehicles - ambulances , police cars, fire trucks , a tank (more precisely, Rhino is an impromptu combat vehicle with a gun converted from a serial van).
Vehicle physics has been improved in Grand Theft Auto III, but it still remains quite unfinished and imperfect. Vehicles have a system of damage, but they are only visual (with the help of collisions) and do not affect their technical characteristics.
Being inside the vehicle, the player has the ability to change the viewing camera - choosing a view “from the bumper of the car”, from a third person, a top view, a cinematic camera.
Groupings
- Devils is a Puerto Rican group located in the Hepburn Heights quarter. Their business is drug trafficking. Cars - modernized versions of the Stallion car with a powerful engine and airbrushing with flames. Hostile to the player after King Kourtney’s “Uzi Raid” mission. Armed with bits. The leader is El Burro . Not the most serious enemies for the player.

The leader is King Courtney .
- Hoodes is an African American gang from the poor areas of Shoreside Vale. It is divided into two groups: “red” and “violet”, which are at war with each other according to the plot (but not on the street). Reds have a positive attitude towards the player. Engaged in pickpocketing and car theft. Armed with pistols or Uzi . Cars - upgraded versions of the Rampo car with a more powerful engine. The leader of the Reds is Di-Ice . The leader of the violet is unknown.

Control Fort Staunton and Cedar Grove. Armed with pistols, Uzi , AK47 . Cars - 5-door pickups on a high suspension in blue. Their leaders are Catalina and Miguel .
Story
The game takes place in 2001 [11] in the fictional city of Liberty City ( Eng. Liberty City ), which is located on the east coast of North America , and its prototype was the real New York [12] .
The player acts as a silent and nameless mercenary (however, now he is better known in the gaming industry as a certain Claude), who, when a bank was robbed, was shot by his own accomplice Katalina , after which he was convicted and arrested. However, during the transportation of prisoners, among whom was the main character, an attack was made on the police motorcade, which allowed the hero to escape.
The name of the hero is never mentioned, the heads of criminal families usually call him “Guy” ( English Kid ) or “Tuzik” ( English Fido , when they want to emphasize his role as a messenger or a person who does all the dirty work). His name - Claude - can be found in the game’s resources, also revealed in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas , where he appears in a cameo role with Catalina.
Having served in a shelter with his cellmate Aitball (8-Ball, in translation - a loser [13] , in the Russian version his name is simply Lysy), he adjoins the Italian mafia family Leone . At first, fulfilling the tasks of a messenger, the main character quickly advances and becomes a significant figure in the family. During one of the assignments, he meets the wife of the godfather of the family, Maria . She falls in love with him and, during one of the quarrels with her husband, says that she slept with him.
Characters
Game Engine
Levels Of Detail, сокр.

В результате Lazlow выгоняет его из студии, говоря что он «лишь дешевый сутенёр из провинциальных областей штата» ( англ. just a cheap pimp from upstate ). I bruise easily, don't throw any tofu or bean curds at me ).
Well I'm sure that's a lesson to us all. ). „He don't talk much“ ), о том, что он не отвечает на её знаки внимания и не проявляет к ней никакого интереса. Does a lion wear clothes? And the lion is the king of the jungle! "That «This isn't 'Gardening with Maurice'». Vice City ).
Такими радиостанциями являются — Radio Active , Liberty FM , WLLC 'The Zone' и Liberty Soul FM .
- Maibatsu Monstrosity . Development
Final Changes
| Adapted translation : "I don't want to be like a terrorist!" Said Sam Houser. Just like their games. As the city went through terrible events, Sam and Dan Hausers thought, “Is it worth it to release this game?” Perhaps it was too early. “This beautiful city was attacked,” Sam thought, “and now we are releasing this crazy game in a fictional city like New York . Oh my god, I terrorized the city I live in and on top of that, we got a startlingly crazy game that people don’t want! " Original : “I don't want to look anything like those terrorists!” Neither could their games. As the city reeled from the attacks, Sam and Dan wondered whether they should even release GTA III at all. Maybe it was too soon. “This beautiful city has been attacked,” Sam thought, “and now we're making a violent crime drama set in a city that's not unlike New York City. My God, I'm terrorized where I live, and on top of that, we've got this f # cking crazy game that is not exactly where people's heads are at right now. ” Excerpt from Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto by David Kushner. Episode "State of Emergency". |
The final version of the game Grand Theft Auto III has many differences from the beta version , which were associated with the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 in the United States [20] [21] . As a result of tight censorship, the game was subjected to big changes, which are most clearly visible when comparing the game promo materials of the beta version of the game with the final version put on sale [20] . Despite the lack of information about the changes to be made and the timing of their introduction, Sam Hauser , president of Rockstar Games , on September 19, 2001 made a statement that some game details for GTA III should be reviewed, which once again confirmed the delay release of the game for three weeks [22] [23] [24] . The game was postponed to October 2, 2001 [25] .
Among the changes that affected the game was the replacement of white-blue design of police cars with white-black, common in many US states [21] . In the beta version of Grand Theft Auto III, the color scheme of the police cars was copied from those of the NYPD, with the NYPD replaced with LCPD [20] [21] [26] .
The most dramatic change was the removal of one of the characters from the final version of the game - Darkela [20] [21] [27] [28] . Mentioned in several early publications before the release of the game, he was a revolutionary and sought to reduce the level of economy in the city. In one of the missions issued by Darkel, it was required to hijack an ice cream van, equip it with a remote bomb, come to it in a crowded place, attract buyers and blow it up [21] [29] . In the final version of the games, this mission was given to another character - El Burro, changing the terrorist attack against innocent residents in the murder of members of the Forelli mafia clan. It was also originally planned that Darkel would issue missions similar to the Rampage missions, pursuing mass extermination of people [30] . However, the memory of Darkel remained in the in-game world in the four homeless people in the tunnel from Harwood to Portland Harbor, and the model and textures of this character remained in the game data files [31] . According to Dan Houser (vice president of Rockstar Games), Darkel was removed from the game long before the release [32] . In total, five missions were connected with him, which were gradually removed, and when only one or two remained, then Darkela was finally cut out of the game, and this happened long before the September 11 attacks [33] .
In the version for the PlayStation 2 , the ability to shoot limbs to other characters of the game world was removed.
We changed the ways of the planes so that it did not seem that he was flying on or somewhere behind the skyscrapers. Also, elderly pedestrians with walkers , schoolchildren, taxi drivers, school buses (were present in 8 screenshots from the beta version) [34] [35] were removed from the game.
The developers themselves, responding to questions from fans of the franchise, which was timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the release of the game, said that only 1% of the original game was changed. They removed only one mission citing terrorists, and also made cosmetic changes affecting car models, replicas of pedestrians, and dialogues on the radio [36] . According to them, the big change was also the replacement of the European cover of the game, for publication in America, with another, whose design subsequently became the corporate identity of this franchise.
Fun fact: Presumably, the developers in a hurry forgot to completely patch the first European version of the game (PAL [1.40]), because of which it left more content from the beta version of the game, which was not in the first American version (NTSC [1.40]) . This is the initial screen saver (you can see the old design of police cars in it), the police cars themselves with their old design, the old airplane paths (but only for DeadDodo) and the Kingdom Come mission from King Courtney (head of the Yardi gang), in which the names of terrorist bombers were not changed (in the European version of “SPANKED-UP suicide bombers”, in the American “SPANKED-UP madmen” and “Destroy the bomber's vans !!”, “Destroy the madmen's vans !!”). And after some time they released a new European version (PAL [1.60]). However, the intro has not been changed.
Localization
In Russia, the game was published by Buka . Initially, the original version in English was released, but later a free patch became available for download, which translated subtitles and textures into Russian. The official release of the game for personal computers in Russia took place on September 10, 2002 .
Later, the right to publish in Russia and in the CIS countries was transferred to the 1C company. On March 26, 2010, the game in Russia was reprinted by 1C [6] . Buki’s translation was taken as the basis, but minor changes were made [37] .

PC and PlayStation 2
Unlike the version of the game for the PlayStation 2 , in the version of the game for the PC, the developers again returned the ability to shoot limbs from game characters. Also in the PC version, the HUD has a slightly different color than in the PS2. Otherwise, there are no differences between the versions.

Easter Eggs and Developer Jokes
In the game Grand Theft Auto III there are a number of Easter eggs ( English Easter egg ) left by the developers of the game.
- In the courtyard, where there will be a car with psychos in the last assignment of King Courtney, there is a place fenced with a very high fence. If you climb over it, then on the back you can see the inscription "You weren't supposed to get here you know", which translates as: "You shouldn't have got here"
- In the Tw @ t Internet cafe, the monitors show the frames of the gameplay from previous GTA and GTA 2.
- In the game you can find the so-called "Ghost Town" - a place where the bank robbery of Claude and Catalina was committed at the very beginning of the game. There are no passers-by and maybe walking through textures.
- After his flight, the corrupt police officer Ray sends the main character a message on his pager : "See you in Miami !" Perhaps this is a reference to the next game in the series - GTA: Vice City , based on the gaming city in which Miami is taken.
- On a fire truck it says: “Don’t burn in silence ... Call 911” - “Do not burn silently ... Call 911.”
- Near the Luigi bar, in the Red Light District, you can see a poster with the inscription "Badfellas" - a reference to the movie "Goodfellas."
- There is a monument with an unusual addition in the square: a traffic cone on the statue’s head. This is a reference to the equestrian monument to Sir Arthur Wellesley Wellington in Glasgow , on the head of which, since 1983, local jokers have been putting on a traffic cone, which for more than 30 years has become a recognizable part of the city’s heritage.
- The Two-Faced Tanner mission mentions “an undercover cop who never gets out of the car,” a reference to the game Driver .
