Mendeleev (lunar crater)

Mendeleev is a large ancient impact crater on the far side of the Moon , named after the outstanding Russian chemist D. I. Mendeleev and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1970. The formation of the crater dates back to the Nectar period [1] .

Crater Description

Mendeleev Crater with craters Schuster, Hartmann and internal crater formations: 1 - Moissan, 2 - Bergman, 3 - Richards, 4 - Fisher, 5 - Garden, 6 - Benedict, 7 - Mendeleev P.

The crater is located on the mainland south of the Moscow Sea near the lunar equator and is essentially a lunar sea resembling the Smith Sea in shape and size [2] .

The crater has a powerful external shaft with smooth outlines and partially collapsed internal slopes. The southern tip of the shaft lies on the lunar equator . In the eastern part of the rampart is the smaller Schuster crater with a diameter of 100.1 km. On the opposite side of the shaft, almost opposite the Schuster Crater, is the 63-km Hartmann Crater.

The bottom of the crater basin is almost flat (in comparison with the rugged terrain surrounding the crater) and has no traces of lava. However, its surface is still relatively uneven and, upon closer inspection, contains many small crater formations, six of which are also given names.

Along the western edge of the basin, almost touching the inner wall of the rampart, Bergman craters with a diameter of 22.5 km are located in the north-western direction, and Moissan (22.5 km) in the west. In the vicinity of the Bergman Crater are: 30-km Fisher - in the northeast and Richards Crater with a diameter of 16.8 km - in the north. Closer to the Schuster Crater is the Garden , 15 km in diameter. Southeast of the center of Mendeleev is the Benedict Crater (13.8 km).

One of the major internal craters of the basin is the satellite crater Mendeleev P (see below).

In addition to the above craters, inside the pool there are many even smaller ones. So, a whole cluster of such craters is located in the center of the bottom, and several more clusters - in its southern and southeastern parts. In the western half of the basin there is a chain of small craters located on one line (a chain of Mendeleev craters ), which begins in the southwestern part and ends at the Richards crater, passing along a tangent at its western rampart.

Mention in fiction

In one of the books of the science fiction cycle " Tales of the Pirks Pilot " by Stanislav Lem, the plot twists around a lunar scientific installation located in the Mendeleev crater.
