Natural Species

Paphiopedilum primulinum var. purpurascens

According to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew [2] :

  • Paphiopedilum primulinum var. primulinum
  • Paphiopedilum primulinum var. purpurascens

Etymology

The Latin species name is given because of the coloring of flowers resembling primrose flowers. The described plants had flowers of various shades of green and yellow, therefore the name Paph. primulinum seemed appropriate. Later color forms were discovered, they were called Paph. primulinum var. purpurascens [3] .

English name - The Primrose Yellow Paphiopedilum.

Biological Description

Escape the sympodial type. The stem is almost completely hidden by the bases of 4-7 leaves. The rhizome is short.

The leaves are broadly linear, 15-17 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, pale green.

The flower stalk is green, single, multi-flowered, flowers open sequentially, 20-35 cm long.

Flowers are 4.2 cm in diameter [4] . According to other sources, 6-8 cm [5] .

Sail from green to yellow, petals and lip can be bright canary, yellow or deep gold. When color forms were discovered, they were called Paph. primulinum var. purpurascens . This variation had greenish flowers with purple strokes over the main background. Later, in the culture, an arched form, it had a bronze or copper-red hue. She has entered the international market called Paph. primulinum var. liltii . The variation was named after the dog collector Ray Rands who sold these plants. This variation has never been described, and most people assume it's just var. purpurascens , but with a different color. In recent years, another group of plants has been implemented as Paph. primulinum , but with larger colors than the nominal form. These flowers were creamy to silver-white petals and lips and are very similar to the albinos of Paph hybrids . Pinocchio , Paph. Avalon Mist or Paph. Memoria Eleanor Ohlund × Paph. primulinum . Some of these hybrids that have failed are called Paph. primulinum was again used in further breeding [3] .

Chromosomes :

  • Paphiopedilum primulinum . 2n = 32, metacentrics 18, telocentrics 14, nf 50
  • Paphiopedilum primulinum f. purpurascens . 2n = 32, metacentrics 16, telocentrics 16, nf 48 [5]

Range, environmental features

The northern part of the island of Sumatra .
Small forests near the peaks of limestone hills, from 5 to 500 meters above sea level. Lime soils, consisting of fallen leaves and humus [5] . The climate is tropical, there is no dry season.

It belongs to the number of protected species (I CITES appendix).

In Culture

This species is unpretentious and can be recommended for beginners Paphiopedilum lovers. It is not demanding on a neutral pH of the substrate and can be contained under partial shade conditions [6] .

The temperature group is warm. For normal flowering, a temperature difference of 5–8 ° C day / night is desirable.
Planting in plastic and ceramic pots with several drainage holes on the bottom, providing uniform drying of the substrate.

The main components of the substrate: see article Paphiopedilum

Some collectors suggest that Paph. primulinum is a calcephil ; therefore, the addition of limestone pebbles to the soil is desirable [7] .

The frequency of watering should be selected so that the substrate inside the pot has time to dry out almost completely, but does not have time to dry out completely. In winter, it is recommended to reduce watering.

Quite often called Paph. primulinum is a hybrid of Paphiopedilum Pinocchio and other hybrids similar to Paphiopedilum primrose. In some cases, it is impossible to distinguish a hybrid from a pure species, which is what commercial firms engaged in selling orchids use. Suspicious signs are the large size of the plant and the number of flowers in the inflorescence.

Paph. primulinum is actively used in hybridization . With his participation, such popular Greeks as Gina Short and others were created.
