Military service in the USSR

In the Soviet Army since 1965 . He graduated from the Omsk Higher Combined Arms Command School named after M.V. Frunze in 1969 . From July 1969, he commanded a motorized rifle platoon, from December 1969, a motorized rifle company, from September 1971, a motorized rifle battalion, and since July 1972, he was deputy commander of a motorized rifle regiment in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany , the Central Asian Military District , and the Trans-Baikal Military District .

In 1978 he graduated from the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze . Since June 1978 - commander of a motorized rifle regiment. Since November 1981 - deputy commander, and since September 1985 - commander of a motorized rifle division. He participated in the Afghan war . After returning from Afghanistan - head of the district training center of the Siberian Military District in Omsk.

In 1990 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR . From July 1990, he commanded the 36th Army Corps in the Turkestan Military District , from June 1992 - the commander of the 52nd Army , and from May 1993 - the commander of the 5th Combined Arms Army in the Far Eastern Military District .

Military service in Russia

Since November 1994 - First Deputy Commander of the Trans-Baikal Military District . Since September 1996 - Commander of the Trans-Baikal Military District . When in December 1998, by combining the Siberian Military District and the Trans-Baikal Military District , the united Siberian Military District with headquarters in Chita was created, Colonel General N.V. Kormiltsev was appointed commander of the troops of this district.

He was one of the few generals of the Armed Forces of Russia who claimed that the decision taken in 1997 to abolish the High Command of the Ground Forces was erroneous. In his district, Kormiltsev retained the old military combat training system and repeatedly publicly declared the need to revive their High Command. In March 2001, a decision was made to revive the High Command of the Ground Forces, and N.V. Kormiltsev on March 28, 2001 was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation - Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation . The military rank of General of the Army was awarded by decree of the President of the Russian Federation of June 11, 2003 .

In October 2004, he filed a report on dismissal due to disagreement with the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation with another reorganization of the structure of the Armed Forces. The report was satisfied.
