Biography
Father - Alexander Vasilievich; He was a major economist, graduated from the Minsk Theological Seminary and the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute; worked at the CSU of the State Planning Commission of the USSR. Mother came from a noble family of the Sulmenevs ; died when Gleb was twelve years old.
Upon moving to Moscow in 1927, the family established close spiritual ties with former members of the Christian student movement . At this time of mass persecution of the Church, the small apartment of the family turned into a temporary refuge for repressed clergymen and their family members hiding from the authorities or going to exile from exile. The first spiritual father of Gleb Kaleda, archpriest Vladimir Ambartsumov , rector of the churches of St. Prince Vladimir in the Old Gardens and St. Nicholas at Straw Gate , was shot on November 5, 1937 . As a teenager, he participated in the activities of the “catacomb church”, maintained contacts with Orthodox clergy who were hiding in the suburbs of Moscow, and provided material assistance to families of repressed priests.
In 1941 he graduated from high school and in August he was called up for military service. After training in the Urals in signalman courses, from December 1941 until the end of the war he was in active units and as a radio operator of the Katyusha guards mortar division he participated in battles near Volkhov , Stalingrad , Kursk , in Belarus and near Koenigsberg . He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner (ordinary!) And World War II , medals. He went through the whole war without getting a single wound. In absentia, he graduated from the course of the Mining Institute and intended to study at Moscow University, but entered in 1945 at the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute , which he graduated with honors in 1951 ; already in senior years he was the leader of the geological party.
In the mid-1940s, he met with the priest Sergius Nikitin, the future bishop Stephen . After the opening of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, he met his first governor, Archimandrite Guriy (Egorov) , who introduced him to Hieromonk John Wendland , the future Metropolitan Yaroslavsky and Rostov, who was a geologist before his church service.
He organized an illegal Christian club in which the children of his acquaintances were engaged. This circle lasted until the 90s; such circles became the prototype of Sunday schools, which subsequently arose at the temples. He wrote scientific works on theological issues that were distributed in samizdat.
In 1954 he defended his thesis, in 1981 - a doctorate in the field of geological and mineralogical sciences. The list of his scientific publications includes over 170 titles. A major specialist in lithology. He worked in scientific and educational institutes, spent a lot of time in geological expeditions in Central Asia . During expeditions to Central Asia, he regularly communicated with the bishop of Central Asia and Tashkent Guriy (Egorov).
In 1972, Metropolitan John (Wendland) secretly ordained Gleb Kaled as deacon, and then as presbyter. Since that time, Father Gleb regularly celebrated the Eucharist in his house church, consecrated in honor of all Russian saints, conducted a great spiritual work.
In 1990 he became a priest of the Moscow diocese; served in the church of Elijah the Ordinary, then - in the newly opened churches of the High Petrovsky Monastery; was the confessor of the community refectory monastery church in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh .
In the fall of 1990, together with a group of like-minded people, he joined the work on creating the Theological and Catechism courses in Moscow and was soon elected their rector. According to Archpriest Vladimir Vorobyov, “Father Gleb very energetically set about organizing the courses, the most difficult task was to find premises: we had no money, we had to look for a free option” [1] . Classes began in February 1991 [2] .
The idea of creating catechetical courses and their active work soon brought to life the Synodal Department of Religious Education and Catechesis , and in the spring of 1991 Archpriest Gleb Kaleda was appointed head of the sector in the Department of Religious Education and Catechesis, in connection with which he asked to be relieved of his post as rector, motivating this is because it is difficult for him to fulfill all his duties [3] . In 1992, the courses were transformed into the Orthodox St. Tikhon's Theological Institute [2] . He was engaged in lecture activities in Moscow and in many cities of Russia.
He became the first Moscow priest to serve in prisons. The first Liturgy in the Butyrsky Church was celebrated in the Bright Week of 1992. Gradually this temple was transformed, an altar was made; many sacrificed church services there. On October 23, 1993, by decree of Patriarch Alexy II, he was appointed rector of the church in honor of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos at Butyrka Prison , and he nurtured the prisoners spiritually [4] .
Being seriously ill and being in the Botkin hospital , he suffered greatly from pain, but he was still vividly interested in what was happening in the parish. He dictated his observations on Orthodox education for the materials of the Council of Bishops [4] . He died on November 1, 1994. His last words were: "Do not worry, I am very well."
He was buried at the Vagankovsky cemetery [5] .
