Biography
The son of the composer Felice Lattuada . He received an architectural education, acted as an art critic. The first film - “Giacomo-idealist” - set in 1942 . Participated in several documentary films. The films The Bandit ( 1946 ) and Without Pity ( 1948 ) are in the spirit of neorealism . Of particular interest is the film “Mill on the Po River” ( 1949 ), where the neorealistic method is applied to historical material (Italian village of the 19th century).
Films
Lattuada filmed the works of famous Italian writers: from N. Machiavelli (Mandrake, 1960 ) to neo-realists J. Vergi (The Wolf, 1953 ) and ending with Dostoevsky's influence Gabriele D'Annunzio (The Crime of Giovanni Episcopo, 1947 )
Russian classics
The first work of Russian classical literature filmed by Lattuada was The Overcoat . Having thus left Gogol's “Overcoat,” the director then directed the films “The Tempest” (based on Pushkin ’s “ Captain's Daughter ”), “Steppe” (based on the Chekhov novel of the same name), and “ Heart of a Dog ” (based on Mikhail Bulgakov's novel of the same name). However, he achieved the greatest success in The Overcoat. Transferring the action to Northern Italy, Lattuada carefully preserved the spirit of the original source.
Lattuada and Fellini
It was Lattuada who gave a “ticket to life” to the novice director Federico Fellini , putting together with him in 1950 the film “ Lights of Variety ”.
