Story

The city of Stargorod comes "the son of a Turkish citizen" - the adventurer Ostap-Suleiman-Bert-Maria-Bender-bey . In the city, he meets a janitor Tikhon. Tikhon tells about his former gentleman, and in the past the leader of the nobility, Ippolit Matveyevich Vorobyaninov , and how he emigrated to Paris after the revolution .

In Stargorod is himself Hippolyte Matveyevich. It turned out that before his death, his mother-in-law told that in the seat of one of the twelve chairs seized during the revolutionary arrest, she sewed up her diamonds, worth 150,000. Vorobyaninov returned to Stargorod to find them. Ostap is taken to help Kise. They conclude a concession .

In addition to Vorobyaninov, the holy father of Fyodor Vostrikov , who confessed her whole life, who had dreamed of his own candle factory in Samara , learned the secret of his mother-in-law, and he also went to hunt chairs. Adventurously, Bender receives warrants for "Vorobianin" chairs from archivist Bartholomew Korobeinikov, while Father Fedor, the archivist, hands orders to the chairs of General Popova, where there are no treasures.

In the two chairs left in Stargorod, nothing happens. The rest of the chairs are in Moscow , where Ostap and Kisa depart. There they learn that the chairs will be sold at auction. But because of the stupidity of Vorobyaninov, who managed to spend his part of the money, the chairs “float away” from his hands. With the help of various tricks the concessionaires find 4 chairs, but there is nothing in them. Leaving one chair, which was lost at the station in Moscow, the heroes decide to look for the four remaining, which are sent along with the theater on tour on the ship "Scriabin". Both are hired by artists on this ship. There they open the successfully obtained chair, and he was left without treasure.

On the river concessionaires get to Cheboksary , and then get to Pyatigorsk . There they catch up to three more chairs, but one chair could slip away from them.

The theater goes on tour, and the characters go to Vladikavkaz . In the 11th chair it also turned out to be empty. On the way, on the Georgian Military Road, Bender and Vorobyaninov meet Fyodor's father, who spent all his savings on fake “Vorobyaninovskiy” chairs, found nothing there and went astray.

Returning to Moscow, Bender learns that the last chair is in the club of railway workers. The half-crazed Vorobyanin, for fear that Ostap will leave him with nothing, kills the sleeping Bender with a knife. Having got into the club, Kisa Vorobyaninov learns from the watchman that the treasures hidden by the bourgeoisie were found in the chair, and the club was repaired. After this unexpected news, Vorobyaninov, having opened the last chair, in despair publishes a "cry shot through a wolf" ...

The film ends with a camera span over the monuments to Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930), Nikolai Gogol (1809–1852) and Alexander Pushkin (1799–1837), as well as over a non-existent monument to Ilya Ilf (1897–1937) and Evgeny Petrov (1902–1942) . People flock to the cinema for the premiere of Leonid Gaidai ’s 12 Chairs (1923-1993). Pictured on the poster, Ostap Bender says:

“I consider the meeting closed. Thank you for your attention! ” [1]

Production

Recruitment

On the role of Bender tried more than 20 candidates. Of these, Nikita Mikhalkov , Oleg Basilashvili , Alexander Belyavsky and Vladimir Vysotsky also showed compatibility with the Gaidai plan, but they could not take part in the film for various reasons.

Before the shooting, Sergey Filippov had severe headaches caused by a brain tumor, and Gaidai invited Rostislav Plyatt , approving him for the role of Kisa Vorobianinov . However, Filippov said that he wanted to act in any case. The situation was resolved when rumors of Filippov 's insistent desire reached Plyatt , and he himself gave Filippov the role of Kisa [2] . During the filming, Filippov was so tormented by headaches that sometimes he even forgot the words [2] . At the end of the shooting, the actor removed the tumor, and he was able to independently voice his character [3] .

Rostislav Plyatt also did not remain without a role. Gaidai , who got into an awkward situation with the actor’s invitation to the role of Kisa , in gratitude offered him to read the text from the author [2] .

Galina Volchek and Nonna Mordyukova tried for the role of Madame Gritsatsuyeva. But the latter did not fit this role, because it seemed not quite funny. They were going to give preference to Galina Borisovna , but the sound engineer Vladimir Krachkovsky from the Gaidai team brought his wife, Natalia Krachkovskaya, to the set . Gaidai looked at her and said: “Here it is, the poet’s dream” [4] .

Confirmation from Mikhail Pugovkin to play the role of Fyodor's father, Gaidai waited for three weeks while the actor consulted with his mother, Natalia Pugovkina, a deeply religious man. The role of the thieving priest, the son was afraid to hurt her feelings. Natalia gave permission [5] .

Shooting

The scene with the set of the generals Popova should have been shot against the backdrop of the storm. The film was already finished, and the storm did not start. The sea became agitated only at the end of October 1970, when it was very cold outside. During the filming of this episode, Pugovkin picked up sciatica [5] .

The vocal quartet “Accord” took part in the shooting.
