Narva population

The dynamics and composition of the population of Estonian Narva are a reflection of the history of the city and its geographical position on the border with the Russian Federation . Narva is the largest city in Estonia by the number of Russian-speaking population. The maximum number of residents was recorded in 1992 - 82 979 people. Since then, the number of Narvites has decreased by more than 20 thousand and continues to decline steadily [1] .

According to the Narva Department of Urban Development and Economics, as of January 1, 2016, 60,406 people were registered in the population register, the number of inhabitants was 58,204 [1] .

According to the Population Register, as of January 1, 2019, 57,842 people lived in the city, which is 8,000 fewer than 10 years ago [2] .

Demographics

 

Representatives of 65 nationalities live in the city and named 41 languages as their mother tongue [3] . The Russian language is the main means of communication in all spheres of the city’s life, although it still does not have any official status, unlike the Estonian SSR . The only official Estonian language is also used in the official sphere, in the administration and partly in education.

Russian speakers make up about 90% of the city’s population [5] . Most Russian-speaking cities also speak Estonian to varying degrees, while Estonians speak Russian. In the past, the importance of German and Swedish was great.

Apart from one, the schools of Narva are Russian-speaking, but the Estonian government plans gradually, starting from the 2007 school year, to translate instruction into Estonian in grades 10-12 in Russian schools. The city has a branch of the Union of the Union of Russian Compatriots in Estonia .

Citizenship

According to the latest register for 2009, citizens of 36 countries of the world live in Narva. [4] Narva has a minimum share of Estonian citizens in Estonia.

As of 2009 [4] :

  • 30 thousand Narvites (45.5%) were citizens of the Republic of Estonia (compared to 2008, their number increased by about 40 people),
  • 23.3 thousand Narvites (35.4%) were citizens of Russia (compared to 2008, their number increased by almost a thousand people),
  • 11.9 thousand (18.1% of the city’s population) were people with undetermined citizenship, holders of “gray” passports (the so-called non - citizens - stateless persons ),
  • the share of citizens of other states was about 1% of the population.
  • Since 2014, the number of migrant workers from Ukraine began to grow.
