On April 23, 1944, to destroy the enemy convoy in the Varangerfjord (Northern Norway), eight “silts” flew under the cover of 14 fighters. The group was led by the party organizer of the squadron, Captain I. B. Katunin. In the Vardø region, its attack aircraft just entered the caravan, which consisted of 8 transports and 20 guard ships, including 6 destroyers. Cover fighters tied Hitler's planes in battle, and Katunin attack aircraft, breaking through dense anti-aircraft fire, rushed to vehicles.
The host went on the attack on the head transport. Suddenly, his IL-2 was hit and caught fire. Captain Katunin entered the car at a peak at an altitude of 1300 meters and sent it to transport. A strong explosion ensued, and an enemy ship of 3,000 gross registered tons sank.
