Style, reviews from critics
The reaction of music critics to the album turned out to be mostly negative. Sal Sinkemani from Slant Magazine gave him two points out of five, calling the disc “a combination of wild, laryngeal and dull rock with more elegant and accessible ballads,” which “is almost impossible to listen to.” The reviewer did not appreciate Courtney Love's vocals, indicating that she was not able to keep the notes for a long time, and her “rattling and tearing” voice resembled “hoarse howls.” Among the other shortcomings of the album, Sinkemani singled out the narrowness of the theme of the songs (they are mainly devoted to drugs and sex) and badly written, silly-sounding lyrics. The critic concluded his devastating review with the argument that the album best demonstrates the level of degradation of the singer [1] .
Only a little higher (two and a half points out of five) was rated by Steven Thomas Erlevine from Allmusic.com . He called the album “sloppy and predictable,” noting that Love sounds very out of date — her raucous vocals and melodies give the impression of “a mix of bad LA punk and bad LA metal”, and some guitar riffs give the impression of plagiarism with Led Zeppelin . In the singer’s attempt to remind herself, according to Erlevine, there is “neither weight nor power”, and ultimately the disc does not look like a full record or at least some work of art, but just like a mediocre scandal in the tabloid press [2] .
