Almost immediately after crossing the border with Germany, the Rhine is divided into Baal and the Neder Rhine . Near Nijmegen, Baal connects to the Maas-Baal Canal , and next to Thiel, the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal departs from Baal. Not far from Vaudrichem, Baal merges with Afgedamde-Maas , forming Boven-Mervede . Rail and road bridges were built at Zaltbommel across Baal.

History
The name Baal, in the days of the Roman Empire, sounded like Vacalis, Vahalis, Valis or later Vahal, has Germanic roots and comes from numerous meanders of the river (Old German: wôh = curved). It is believed that the Waalkill River (one of the Hudson tributaries) during the period of Dutch colonization was named after Baal (Waalkil - “Baal Stream”).
In the Middle Ages, Baal continued after its merger with the Meuse . Parts of the delta, known today as Boven-Mervede, Beneden-Mervede and the upper honor of the Nord River, were also called Baal.
Currently, the river no longer has those bends due to the numerous projects to improve the river in terms of shipping undertaken in the XVII, XIX and XX centuries. Some of the sections of the old woman are still visible and connected to the main channel during the period of high water.
Water Quality
The water quality in Baal is low due to the discharge of sewage into it in France, Germany and Belgium. A number of pathogens have been found in the waters of the river due to such discharges. [3]
