Museum History
January 10, 1960 in Saransk opened the Mordovian Republican Art Gallery named after F.V.Sychkov , located in the building on the street. Soviet, where the museum’s exhibition center is now located [2] . In 1978, the art gallery was reorganized into a museum of fine arts. The name S. D. Erzi was given to the museum in 1995 [1] .
Main Museum Building
The museum building (Kommunisticheskaya St., 61) consisted of two buildings. The western, older building (architect V.I. Sologub, engineers V.I. Borisov, E.A. Sukhov) was built in 1976 , to mark the 100th anniversary of Erzi. In 1985, another building was built nearby, connected with the first building by a passage at the level of the 2nd floor. In the fall of 2001 , on the eve of the 125th anniversary of the birth of Erzi, the museum buildings were reconstructed, which greatly improved their appearance. In 2012, the museum underwent a major reconstruction of the facade and interior, while the buildings were combined into one building [1] [3] .
Showroom
The exhibition hall of the museum (29 Sovetskaya St.) was built in the mid-1950s according to the project of architect S. O. Levkov [3] . It is located next to the building of the Mordovian National Drama Theater and is connected to it by a one-story insert.
