Executive power is in the hands of the monarch, who forms the government in agreement with political parties. Legislative power belongs to the bicameral General States. The marriage of the heir to the throne must be approved by parliament; a prince or princess who marries without parliament’s permission is denied the right to inherit the throne.
All laws, after adoption by the General States, are approved by the king. The monarch is the chairman of the Council of State, consisting of members of the royal family and government officials and politicians appointed by the monarch who are involved in lawmaking.
The monarch may award orders (Order of the Netherlands Lion, Order of the Orange-Nassau and the Military Order of Willem).
The royal family manages six palaces, including the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The monarch does not pay inheritance tax on property inherited by him.
