Verend ( Swede. Värend ) is a historical region in Sweden in the historical province of Småland . Approximately corresponds to the eastern part of the modern Lena Krunuberg .
Located in the southern part of Smoland. Formed in the Middle Ages (around 1050) around Veksjo , where local tings and fairs were held. Since 1170, Veksjo also became the seat of the bishop . The border of Verenda long coincided with the borders of the diocese of Veksjo.
Neighborhood of Verenda with Denmark and the residence of the bishop in Veksø made his position special among the rest of Smoland. Region in the XIII century. divided into five heradas (counties): Albu , Chinnewald , Conga , Norrviding and Upving .
In the late Middle Ages in Verenda there were strong separatist sentiments, the main forum of which was the local landsting . The culmination of these sentiments was the participation of the people of Verenda in the uprising of Nils Dhaka in 1542-1543, which was caused by Gustav Vasa’s policy aimed at strengthening the central government.
After the uprising, the name "Verend" disappeared from the administrative-territorial map of Sweden.
Regarding the origin of the name of the region, there are numerous opinions, according to one of which "Verend" meant "land rich in people."
