Literature references
The ballad of A. K. Tolstoy “Alyosha Popovich” (1871) was at one time rejected by two editors of leading Russian journals because of the “immorality” of its content. The ballad begins like this:
Who paddle so deftly rules
Through air and kubyr?
This is Popovich glorious,
That Alesha-hero.
Behind his shoulders are the harp,
And in the legs is a scarlet shield,
Against his princess
Filled sitting ...
However, it turns out that the historical and “heroic” details of the narrative seem to have nothing to do with it. The hero of the ballad is simply the famous "fowler" by the "maiden" part. In modern language, he “rolls on another lily” and finally achieves his own ... M.N. Katkov, who did not allow this ballad to be published in Russky Vestnik, wrote with indignation: “A good fellow led a soul-girl and does not let her go until she “surrenders,” and when he is out of need, he will let her go, as in such cases ... It would be disgusting, reduced to a simple expression, but in elaborate colors, perfumed, idealized, elevated to the apotheosis, it becomes shorter and more outrageous ". Tolstoy jokingly replied to this accusation that, as he managed to find out, nothing “outrageous” happened: “Popovich and the maiden, having sailed for 25 minutes on a boat, went ashore in the village named Papsuevka ... where good priest Father Gerasim Pomdamur ... "
Alexey Konstantinovich Tolstoy lived in the village of Krasny Rog (now the Pochepsky District of the Bryansk Region ), 20 km from the village of Papsuevka.
