Story

Spain, XVII century. Two students, Felipe and Pastrano, who left a boring university, decide to look for happiness in Madrid. Felipe falls in love with Don Martha, already married to her father's friend - old captain Urbin. Martha and the younger sister Lucia fall in love with Felipe. Desiring to defend Martha’s honor, her brother Antonio attacks the serenade Felipe, who was singing near their house, and dies at his hand. Martha's father, Don Gomez, tells his son’s corpse that the killer will be captured and executed. Martha uses her brother’s death to delay the wedding with Urbina.

Urbina invites Gomez and his daughters to Illescas, where he recently bought a house. There will be a holiday and a bullfight. Felipe hides there, whom his friend Pastrano did not leave. Martha manages to meet with Felipe and talk with him.

During the bullfight, Urbina's nephew, the lieutenant, falls off the horse, and Felipe intervenes in the battle, killing the bull. It turns out that the lieutenant is his childhood friend, who only recently returned to Spain. He loves Lucia. In the conversation, it turns out that Urbina got rich overseas.

In the house at Urbina, after Felipe, who was hiding in the crowd, sang his song, Martha says that recently she received a heavenly sign and vowed to preserve innocence. In Madrid, she portrays deep piety, helps the poor, is about to open the infirmary for them. She manages to let Felipe into her house under the guise of a sick student Nibenimedo, who will teach her Latin. Felipe, out of caution, must portray the love of Lucia, who naturally recognized him, who was already entangled in her love for him and the lieutenant.

Pastrano, having come to Gomez for the second time under the name of the representative of the Seville service chamber, don Juan Utrado, reports that the killer has been caught, a sentence has already been announced and offers to go to Seville. Gomez readily agrees, and Urbina goes to accompany him to Illescas. Pastrano happily tells Felipe and Martha that both old men will leave Madrid in an hour, and this allows them to get married easily. But his friend and friend’s lover do not agree to this. Martha goes to Captain Urbina and confesses her pretense. It turned out that Urbina unraveled it and felt guilty himself, since the ardor of passion suits youth, not old age. To the approaching Gomez, the captain explains that Felipe is innocent of murder, and promises to give a good dowry to both sisters. Felipe tells Gomez that, being partly to blame for the death of his son, he himself will become his son. Lucia marries the lieutenant, and Pastrano marries Gomez's sister-in-law Ines, which both have long wanted.

The script of the film is different from the play (some plot moves have been changed or deleted) [2] .
