The Dutch Republic , conscious of the strategic location of the castle, renewed its fortifications and provided it with a permanent garrison. Loovestein seemed all the more impregnable because during the flood of the rivers he turned into an island . During the 17th century, it served as a prison for political prisoners and was launched as such in the Dumas novel The Black Tulip .
In 1619, for life imprisonment , the scientist Hugo Grotius was brought to the castle, but he managed to escape from there in a chest from under the books. In 1631, seven prisoners of repairmen were transported from it in wine barrels. Finally, in 1650, parliamentarians disliked by Orangemen , led by Jan de Witt, were sharpened in the castle.
During World War II, the castle was incorporated into the fortified Dutch waterline . Currently here is a museum.
