The company was founded in 1934 by engineer Hans Trunkenpolz in the city of Mattighofen . At first it was a metalworking workshop "Kraftfahrzeuge Trunkenpolz Mattighofen". Motorcycle production began in 1954 .
KTM is known for its off-road motorcycles, but in recent years it has expanded the production of road motorcycles.
