Public Response
The name of the song is “If U Seek Amy”, which literally translates as “If you are looking for Amy” and in the context of the composition does not make sense (the line in the chorus in which it appears, in the translation sounds like: “... all the boys and all the girls pray that if you are looking for Amy ”), it is perceived as a spoken combination of“ FUCK ME ”(“ Fuck me ”). Because of this, the song was criticized by some critics and listeners: The Independent called it “rude” and “cheap” and added that “the song was written solely to give Britney the opportunity to sing her“ FUCK me “” [1] and Chris Willman from Entertainment Weekly spoke of her as a “childish outburst,” designed for a “sensation among high school students” [2] . Complaints began to come from the public: for example, Sydney housewife Leoni Barzenbach told reporters from Undercover News that she was “shocked when she heard her sons five and seven years old walking around the house, singing:“ FUCK ME “” [3] . “It's terribly rude and insulting,” the woman added. In this regard, the WFLZ-FM radio station released the song on air in a self-made processing, where “If U Seek Amy” turned into “If U See Amy” (“If you see Amy”; this was how DJs announced it on the radio) [4] . Subsequently, the censored radio version of the song with the same name was officially released by Spears herself and her firm [5] . NME later included If U Seek Amy among the most obscene songs in history. [6]
Music video
Filming began on February 10, 2009 . The director of the video was Jake Nava, who had already worked with Spears on the filming of the music video for the song “ My Prerogative ”. After the release of the clip, he immediately became the leader in downloadability on iTunes.
