Biography
The daughter of Prince Serpukhov, Borovsky and Maloyaroslavsky Yaroslav (Athanasius) Vladimirovich and Maria Fedorovna (daughter of the boyar Fedor Fedorovich Goltay Koshkin ). In 1433 she was married to the Grand Duke of Moscow Vasily II of the Dark [1] and became the Grand Duchess.
In the second year of marriage, after the seizure of power by the sons of Prince Yuri Zvenigorodsky - Vasily and Dmitry Yuryevich, she was sent to exile in Galich , from where she later managed to return with great difficulty.
On February 12, 1446, princes Dmitry Shemyaka , John Mozhaisky , Boris Tverskoy attacked Moscow, captured the city and put Mary Yaroslavna in prison, then captured Vasily II and on February 16, 1446 decided to blind him and send him to Uglich .
Subsequently, Maria Yaroslavna, along with the mother of Vasily II of the Dark - Sophia Vitovtovna took a large part in the life and management of the principality.
Trying to gain the location of the church, she granted her various benefits, in particular, in 1450 the Trinity-Sergius Monastery was exempted from duties, in 1471 the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery and others were exempted from taxes.
After the death of her husband in 1462, she inherited Rostov and Poshekhonye (locality) , part of the volosts of Kolmensky district.
In 1480, Maria Yaroslavna blessed her son, Grand Duke Ivan III , to fight Khan Akhmat .
Chronicles preserved the image of Maria Yaroslavna as a wise, judicious mother, whose advice more than once in difficult periods of her life was asked by her adult children.
In 1482, she was tonsured a monastery under the name of the nun Martha.
She died in 1484 . It was originally buried in the Ascension Convent of the Moscow Kremlin , which in 1467 was renovated and restored at the personal expense of Maria Yaroslavna. In 1929, the ashes of Maria Yaroslavna were reburied in the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin .
