History

Modern Meghri is located in the Arevik region of the Syunik region of historical Armenia [2] . Dry fruits, almonds, nuts, and beans were delivered from Meghri to Holy Echmiadzin as a church tax [3] .

During the Russian-Persian war of 1804-1813, active hostilities were conducted in the Meghri region. In early May 1810, the shah Abbas-Mirza pulled the troops (30 thousand people) to Nakhichevan in order to invade Karabakh and seize Georgia . Having crossed Araz , on May 15, 1810, the Persians occupied Meghri. The commander of the Karabakh detachment of Russian troops, Major General Peter Nebolsin, sent a detachment (battalion of the 17th Eger regiment, about 500 people) under the command of Colonel Peter Kotlyarevsky with the task of freeing Meghri, which, as a communications hub, was the key to Karabakh and Tebriz . The Meghri garrison consisted of 1,500 regular Persian infantry (Sarbaz) with artillery (7 batteries), located on the right, steep bank of the Meghri River. The approaches to the village were strongly fortified with abutments defended by two hundred sarbaz. Divided into three columns, the Russian detachment secretly approached Megri along the valley of the Araks River and in the morning of June 17, suddenly attacked the central Persian fortification, broke into the village and, after a stubborn battle, captured it. The Persians lost more than 300 people, the losses of the Russian detachment amounted to 35 people. Subsequent attempts of the Persian troops to return Megri were unsuccessful [4] .

From August 31, 1921 to 1930, Meghri was the administrative center of Meghri County that existed during this period [5] [6] of the Armenian SSR.
