Biography

 
Naum Grebnev. 1943

Born November 20, 1921 in Harbin in a Jewish family. Father - Isai Nakhimovich Rambakh (1886-1931), editor of the Russian-language Soviet newspaper (Forward, Tribune) in Harbin in 1919-1924. From July 1926 in Moscow, he worked in the Sovtorgflot, then in the All-Industry (All-Union Chemical Industry Association "All-industry" Supreme Economic Council of the USSR), died in September 1931 in Moscow. [1] .

Mother, Leia Iosifovna Rambakh (nee Halberg, 1899-1991), Elizaveta Iosifovna, was a teacher of foreign languages ​​and a translator, including in the Foreign Commission of the Writers' Union, taught English in evacuation in Tashkent . With her participation began - at first in absentia - meeting Grebnev with Anna Akhmatova . She left handwritten memoirs “In Harbin,” where, among other things, she talks about the arrests of Harbin residents, including the arrest of the writer’s mother, Yuri Nikolaevich Abdashev, and how she found her many years later, as well as “Notes by a translator,” where she writes a lot about E. D Stasova .

The Great Patriotic War found Grebnev from the very beginning, because at that time he served on the border, near Brest . He retreated with the Red Army , fell into the famous Kharkov (Izyum-Barvenkovskoye) environment, where the Germans captured 130 thousand Red Army soldiers, was one of the few, forced Seversky Donets , fought near Stalingrad , was wounded three times, and after the last wound on January 12 1944 the war ended for him. He titled his memories of the war, "War was the most serious event of my biography." Naturally, in the poem “Cranes” (which became the words of a famous song ), he also invested his experience of war.

After the war, Grebnev studied with Gamzatov at the Literary Institute , and since then their friendship and cooperation began. In 1949 he graduated from the Literary Institute . Grebnev also translated poems from the poet’s father, Gamzat Tsadasa .

In 1951, he was criticized by M. Bubennov in the article “Are literary pseudonyms necessary now?” For using a pseudonym [2] .

Among the translations are contemporary poets Gamzat Tsadas , Rasul Gamzatov , Kaisyn Kuliev , Alim Keshokov , Tanzil Zumakulov , Irakli Abashidze , Shota Nishnianidze , Ivan Tarba, Konstantin Lomia , Adam Shogentsukov .

He translated the classics of East poetry, such as the Uzbek classical poets Furkat , Turdy , Mahmur , Uvaysi , Agahi ; classic Karakalpak poet Berdah , Turkmen classical poets Zelili , Makhtumkuli , Myatadzhi .

Of particular note is the book “Truths. Sayings of the Persian and Tajik peoples, their poets and wise men ”translated by N. Grebnev (1968), which was designed by his wife, Noemi Moiseevna Grebneva , a graphic artist , as well as a connoisseur of poetry and a reteller of the Bible for children. Noemi Moiseevna designed a number of translation books by Naum Grebnev. One of her most successful works was the book “Truth. Sayings of the Persian and Tajik peoples, their poets and sages ”, the cover of which depicts a vertical black key on a white background. Incredibly popular was the poem by Rasul Gamzatov “Cranes” translated by Grebnev, thanks to the song “Cranes” performed by Mark Bernes , first sounded in 1969 .

Earlier in the USSR, memorial complexes and monuments to those who died in the Great Patriotic War began to be erected with the image of flying cranes and the text of the first lines of the song. Later, new monuments with cranes appeared, although without the verses of R. G. Gamzatov, translated by N. I. Grebnev. Such is the memorial complex in St. Petersburg. The stela with black cranes, erected at the former theater center on Dubrovka, has no inscriptions. After the song “Cranes” the image of cranes became a symbol of memory of the dead.

Grebnev believed that in Russian poetry there are masters who have all the translations to the best: Samuel Marshak and Boris Pasternak .

Naum Grebnev translated the Armenian poets Naapet Kuchak , Grigor Narekatsi , Baghdasar Dpir , Hovhannes Tumanyan . Not well known, although they deserve special attention, Grebnev’s translations of such medieval Armenian poets as Amam Areveltsi .
