History

Theodor Gorschelt. Siege of the aul of Vedenia (Kurin Regiment) 1859

Theodor Gorschelt. Siege of the aul of Vedeni 1859

In the middle of the XIX century, it was the last capital of the North Caucasus Imamate - a theocratic Islamic state that existed on the territory of Dagestan and Chechnya in 1829-1859.

April 1, 1859 during the Caucasian War , the village of Vedeno was taken by assault by Russian troops. A fortress was built in the village.

From September 1919 to March 1920, it was the capital of the North Caucasus Emirate - an Islamic state proclaimed in the territory of Chechnya and Western Dagestan by the Avar Sheikh Uzun-Hadji , who occupied a village with a small detachment, entrenched in it and declared war on Denikin [3] . Money was printed in Vedeno for the emirate. The paper was used in different grades, including from school notebooks to the ruler. [4] .

During the deportation of the Chechen people and the abolition of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Vedeno was one of the rare villages whose name was preserved. However, by a resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR of June 7, 1944, the Vedeno district of the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was established from the former Vedeno district of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic with its center in the village of Vedeno.

After the Chechens returned from deportation in 1957, the Vedeno district was reinstated as part of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

During the First Chechen War, it was captured by Russian troops on June 3, 1995 and controlled by them until the end of the first company.

During the Second Chechen War , on November 17, 1999, under Vedeno, Russian troops suffered the first major losses - the reconnaissance group of the 31st separate airborne brigade lost 12 people and were taken prisoner [5] . Vedeno was again taken by Russian troops on January 11, 2000.

In August 2001, separatists clashed in the village with regular Russian troops, during which an attack on the military commandant's office took place [6] .

In March 2006, battles again took place in the vicinity of the village, during which more than 3,000 Chechen police and OMON units were sent there, which were opposed by the units of Shamil Basayev and Doku Umarov [7] .
