Creation History
Megadrive Portable was developed based on the 16-bit Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) game console. Previously, Sega released a portable version of the console - SEGA Nomad . She had the ability to connect to a TV and the ability to connect a second gamepad. The disadvantages of the console were large dimensions, weight and power consumption.
In Megadrive Portable , the problems that Sega Nomad had were solved, but there is no compatibility with previously released cartridges - the console uses tiny gray cartridges with a different connector, although electrical compatibility is preserved, Megadrive Portable also does not have the ability to connect a second gamepad. The disadvantages of Megadrive Portable include the fact that it is powered by four AAA batteries, and not from the built-in battery.
The Megadrive Portable console is available in three color options:
- Blue with green buttons (discontinued)
- Silver with dark gray buttons
- Blue with dark gray buttons
In the last two versions, the TCT6001H and Altera Max II are replaced by open-box analogues
Megadrive Portable 3D
On January 15, 2008, [1] a modified version of the console called Megadrive Portable 3D was released . Its main difference from its predecessor was the presence of a large 3- inch screen (the previous model has a 2.5-inch screen). The design has also been slightly modified.
Full list of changes:
- Superbright screen with a diagonal of 3 inches.
- Li-pol 1100 Mah battery included (instead of batteries).
- The adapter for recharging.
- Various body color options (see below).
- TCT6001H was replaced by TCT6703, Altera Max II was replaced by three logic chips, a flash memory chip with firmware was added where in the settings you can change the prefix region
At the moment, the Megadrive Portable 3D console is presented in 4 color variants of the case:
- Purple with green buttons
- Silver with dark gray buttons
- Blue with green buttons
- Black with black buttons
Technical Details
- The processor, coprocessor and the entire chipset replace the tectoy TCT6001H chip and the altera Max II FPGA . Technical specifications (processor frequency, memory size, etc.) are identical to those of the Sega Mega Drive .
- Software compatibility with Sega Mega Drive, but due to minor implementation flaws, the device does not work correctly with some games.

At the moment, more than 140 games in Russian, including various collections, have been released for Megadrive Portable .
Weaknesses and criticism
- Despite the wide distribution of this console in large retail chains in Russia , the licensing and legality of this set-top box is in doubt .
- The appearance of the console is partially borrowed from Game Boy Advance
- Having only 3 (A, B, C) control buttons instead of 6 (A, B, C, X, Y, Z) can cause inconvenience when managing games that support all 6 buttons.
