In 1941-1945, fifty-three pilots of the Northern Fleet aviation were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union . Boris Feoktistovich Safonov for the first time during the Great Patriotic War was awarded this title twice. The Second Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union, he was awarded posthumously in 1942 .

Nowadays, six North Sea pilots have been awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation . Timur Avtandilovich Apakidze was one of the first in the air force of the Northern Fleet to be awarded this high rank. He died during a demonstration flight in 2001 .
