Jackie Wilson created the first vocal group at the age of 17. After a repeated change in composition, it became known as The Dominoes . Together with his group, he participated in the famous Alan Freed show “Moon Dog Ball” in March 1953, which was organized in Cleveland at the Arena stadium, which seats 10,000 spectators. Even the great Elvis Presley imitated Wilson, and Michael Jackson considered him his dance teacher [1] . He accepted Judaism [2] .

Wilson's best recordings were written and produced in the late 1950s by Detroit Berry Gordy , the future founder of recording giant Motown Records . The germ of Motown’s signature sound is felt in Wilson’s songs such as Lonely Teardrops , the single released in March 1958 (1st place on black music charts, 7th place on Billboard Hot 100 ), as well as later ones on A Woman, A Lover, A Friend "and" Night ".

Wilson had a reputation as a "womanizer." In 1961, one of the fans chasing him inflicted a severe gunshot wound. The singer dropped out of show business for several years and therefore did not get into the number of artists of the Motown company that was being created at that time. He returned to the scene in the midst of the " British invasion ", when his characteristic style of performance seemed already old-fashioned. In the late 1960s, Chicago producer Carl Davis helped Wilson make several recordings in a more modern manner.

In 1975, after the performance of Lonely Teardrops, Jackie Wilson lost consciousness and fell into a coma , from which he had not already left. He always gave his best in his live performances, charging the audience with energy. Studio recordings with typical 1950s pop arrangements give a less complete picture of the extent of Jackie Wilson's vocal talent.

Specialists in the history of pop music highly appreciate the “black Elvis”: for example, in November 2008, Rolling Stone magazine put him on the 26th place in the list of the greatest vocalists of the rock and roll era [3] . When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was created in 1987, the name of Jackie Wilson was immediately entered into it. The true dimensions of his talent and contribution to the development of music become more clear with increasing historical distance.
