Biology
Nest in an old tree, in wooden structures, in dry plant stems, in galls, in empty shells of mollusks, on stones, in cracked rocks, in clay and sandy soil. The cells are lined with pieces of leaves or flower petals, sand grains fastened with saliva. There are kleptoparasitic forms ( Stelis , Coelioxys ) that do not suit nests. Mostly polytrophic and oligotrophic plant pollinators.
Feature
Bees from small (5 mm) to large sizes (18 mm). The upper lip is longer than its width. Pygidium is absent. This family also includes the largest bee species in the world - Megachile pluto with a body length of 39 mm and a wingspan of 63 mm.
Distribution
Distributed throughout the world, except Antarctica .
