The armament of ships is based on carrier-based aircraft consisting of F / A-18 Hornet fighter-bombers, as well as electronic warfare aircraft, early warning radar , transport aircraft and anti-submarine helicopters. The total mass of ammunition is 1954 tons. Own airborne weapons are represented by anti-aircraft missile and anti-aircraft artillery systems. As well as equipment for troops on board, it includes up to 4 Abrams tanks, and 6 AAV7s .

The type was named after the lead ship of the series, Nimitz , commissioned in 1975 . A total of 10 aircraft carriers were built, including the latter, the George W. Bush, which was included in the fleet in 2009 . During their operation, ships were widely used in various military conflicts, including in Yugoslavia and Iraq .

Incidents

On January 25, 1987 , while on the coast of Libya , the Sky-Warrior electronic reconnaissance aircraft EA-3B reported to the aircraft carrier a critical malfunction that made it impossible to land using the aerofinisher . On the Nimitsa, they urgently removed the excess aircraft equipment to the sides and pulled across the deck the so-called "Barricade" (elastic network) for braking an emergency plane. Skywarrior struck the barricade and fell overboard. A crew of 7 people died. [8]

It should be noted, however, that the complete wing of the U.S. Navy carrier group has much wider strike and defensive capabilities compared to the forces of the naval base regiments TAVKR of the Navy of the USSR and Russia, due to the inclusion of Squadrons of AWACS, electronic warfare and deck aircraft transport aviation.
