Story
The plot of the film is vaguely reminiscent of Shakespeare's Hamlet . [2] A young man, Koichi Nishi (played by Toshiro Mifune ) wants to avenge the death of his father, who was forced to suicide by the vice president of a large land company. In order to imprison the accomplices of the crime, Nishi uses other people's documents (Nishi is not his real name), is hired by the secretary in the same company, comes to trust in the vice president of Iwabuchi and son of Iwabuchi, even marries his daughter Yoshiko. At the wedding, Nishi and Yoshiko bring a large festive cake in the form of a house from which the father of the protagonist fell out, after which the heads of the company understand that someone is hunting for them.
Ideological component
According to R. Yurenev, “the strength and weakness of Kurosawa’s ideological positions affected the film’s imagery system. "He boldly went into battle with capitalist morals, but did not find any other means of struggle than an individual feat, revenge of a loner, prompted by the insult and death of his father." [1] Seeing Hamlet’s parallels, Victor Raspopin writes that the film turns “Shakespeare’s problems inside out, for Hamlet’s strength is in his weakness, and Nisi’s strength is in anger until it runs out.” [3]
Akira Iwasaki, in a review for The Art of Cinema, wrote [4] :
Kurosawa created a work of great power. The film shows with great conviction the hatred of an ordinary person to social injustice. The painting is extremely skillfully constructed and completely captures the viewer.
The only drawback of the film is its plot intricacies that distract the viewer from the main topic. Following one after another, unexpected turns of action lead to the fact that the film begins to be perceived as a regular drama of revenge, like "Count of Monte Cristo." Many events take place before the avenger manages to achieve his goal and punish evil. However, at this time, the avenger himself appears in the role of the one to be avenged, and the victory ultimately remains on the side of the high-ranking sales clique. The plot intricacies lead to the fact that genuine issues recede into the background.
