University history

The university was founded in 1922 as the Moscow Peat Institute, but was soon merged with the Agricultural Academy. Timiryazev , and then transferred to the Moscow Mining Academy . In 1930, the university again became an independent educational institution - the Moscow Peat Institute. Initially, the institute had three departments - mining, technological and mechanical. The main task of the institute was to train specialists for the peat industry. In the 1930-1931 school year, 191 students studied at the institute. 38 faculty members worked in 23 departments of the institute, including 11 professors and 16 associate professors .

The creation of MIT ensured the scientific and technical development of the peat industry. In 1940, N. A. Nasedkin defended the first doctoral dissertation at MTI, created modern educational and research laboratories.
By the beginning of World War II, the number of students was already 1,100. During the war, the institute was partially evacuated to Sverdlovsk ; in Moscow , a sector was created to fulfill defense orders. Under the guidance of Professor N. A. Nasedkin, the patency of tanks in wetland conditions was investigated. Professor M. P. Volarovich investigated the problem of the optimal composition of lubricating oils to facilitate engine starting at low temperatures. Under the guidance of Professor S. S. Dragunov, designs of heating pads for soldiers were developed on the basis of peat crumb. During the war, a branch of the institute was opened in Orekhovo-Zuyevo . In 1943, the institute returned from evacuation to Moscow.

In the years 1930-1958, when the institute worked in Moscow, 3,949 engineers were trained in mechanics, technologist, hydraulic engineer and railway engineer. Famous scientists, in particular , V. Sokolovsky , Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences , and VE Rakovsky, Corresponding Member of the BSSR Academy of Sciences, taught at the university. In 1958, the institute was transferred to Kalinin and received the name Kalinin Peat Institute (KTI). In the 1958-1959 school year , recruitment for the first year (200 people) in Kalinin was made, and senior courses continued their studies in Moscow. By 1960, 184 people taught at the institute, of which 60% came from Moscow.

By 1965, about 30 candidate and doctoral theses were defended at the institute. The institute has established scientific schools on the physics and chemistry of peat, on friction and wear in machines, on the mechanics and processing of peat, on the development of peat deposits, on the geology of peat deposits, on the mechanics of deformation of solids, and many others.
In the 60s, an intensive development of the institute takes place - new buildings and dormitories are being built, new departments and faculties are being opened. At 8 faculties of the institute, 6500 students are enrolled, the institute from specialized becomes polytechnic and gets the name Kalinin Polytechnic Institute (KPI).

In the 70s, new specialties were discovered at the institute - “highways”, “hydromelioration”, “chemical technology of varnishes and paints”. In 1972, for achievements in the training of engineering personnel and the development of scientific research, and on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its foundation, the institute was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor . By 1987, the institute has already 13 faculties and 53 departments, which are taught in 19 specialties. The institute employs 25 doctors of science and more than 300 candidates of science , a total of more than 700 teachers, of whom 25 are professors and 316 associate professors . The number of students reaches 9,000 people. Begins training for foreigners from Asia , Africa and Latin America .

In the 90s there was a reduction in the number of students and teachers of the university, as well as the number of faculties and departments. Admission was reduced from 1475 to 1100, and then to 950 people. The university is working on the transition to a multi-level system of training, significantly changed the structure of specialties, opened new areas of training: "Environmental Engineering", "Management", "Psychology", "Chemistry", "Biotechnology", "Information systems in the economy", "Instrument". In 1994, the institute received the status of a state technical university. By 1997, the university had 7 educational buildings and buildings with a total area of over 57,000 square meters.

During his time in Tver, the university has prepared more than 60 thousand specialists and scientists. Among the graduates are scientists and teachers, heads of large enterprises and organizations, famous managers, government, political and public figures.
