Most of this population lives in small villages scattered around Cortino. In recent years, the population has been declining gradually as people move to a larger and more developed Teramo.
Until 1816, Cortino was still part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Cortino was one of 29 mountain villages that formed the “Statue di Roseto,” as Abruzzo Ulteorior I was then known, today known as the province of Teramo. Administrative changes occurred in 1868, after the unification of Italy, when the communal status of Valle San Giovanni was abolished. Colleglesco, Casanova and Faeto were then included in the Commune of Cortino.
The municipal archives of Cortino were almost completely destroyed in 1943.
