Whisper of the heart ( 耳 を す ま せ ば Mimi about sumaseb , letters. “If you listen”) is a manga and based on it a full-length film by Ghibli studio, released in 1995 . The author of the fantastic cartoon landscapes was the famous Japanese impressionist painter and writer Naohisa Inoue .

Story
The plot tells about Shizuku Tsukishima, a middle school student who loves spending her free time behind a book. However, whatever volume she took in the library, Seiji Amasawa’s name always appeared on his form. After meeting an unusual guy, Shizuku realizes that he is her first love. Communicating with him opens up her inner world for the girl; she learns a lot of new things about others and about herself.
One of the main topics covered in the plot is the period of growing up and first love, transitional age in all its manifestations. In many details, the evolution of the girl’s feelings is considered - from dissatisfaction with the annoying boy to attachment to him. However, the most important topic is to find yourself and overcome difficulties on the way to your dream.
Spin Off
As the film progresses, Shizuku is working on a science fiction story that revolves around a cat figurine named Baron , found in Mr. Nishi's antique shop. In 2002, Ghibli’s studio released a spin-off film “The Return of the Cat” directed by Hiroyuki Morita , where the cat Baron and the stray cat Moon ( English Muta ) reappear .
